Healthy Skin and Pressure Injury Prevention

Skin may become thinner and more vulnerable as people age. Long periods without repositioning can increase the risk of pressure injuries, especially for people who have limited mobility. A healthcare professional can recommend an individualized plan that may include regular position changes, gentle cleansing, moisture management, skin inspection and appropriate support surfaces. Caregivers should promptly report persistent redness, new open areas, swelling or skin pain. Do not massage areas that may be developing a pressure injury, and seek professional guidance for wound care.

Care at home

Every person’s care needs are different. Families can work with healthcare professionals to create a plan that supports comfort, dignity, independence and safety. Home health aides and certified nursing assistants provide assistance within their training and authorized scope; medical assessment and treatment should be directed by licensed clinicians.

What families can do

Maintain clear communication with the care team, note meaningful changes in symptoms or daily abilities, and seek guidance when a new concern arises. Personalized support and a safe, respectful home environment can make daily care easier to navigate.
