Pneumonia Awareness and Prevention
Pneumonia can be particularly serious for older adults. Helpful preventive steps may include staying current with recommended vaccinations, practicing hand hygiene, avoiding tobacco smoke and managing underlying illnesses. Some older people may develop confusion or unusual weakness instead of a high fever. Persistent cough, breathing difficulty, chest pain, fever or sudden changes in mental status warrant medical evaluation. Home support can include observing changes, encouraging clinician-approved activity and helping arrange timely care.
Care at home
Every person’s care needs are different. Families can work with healthcare professionals to create a plan that supports comfort, dignity, independence and safety. Home health aides and certified nursing assistants provide assistance within their training and authorized scope; medical assessment and treatment should be directed by licensed clinicians.
What families can do
Maintain clear communication with the care team, note meaningful changes in symptoms or daily abilities, and seek guidance when a new concern arises. Personalized support and a safe, respectful home environment can make daily care easier to navigate.
